Please come along to work on the next steps in the Statutes campaign, including discussing future action and to help develop the inspiring ‘University of the Aire’ theme which emerged in the ‘Striking Insights’ teach-out.
1. Next steps on Statutes, including discussion of academic censure and boycott. Including: 1.1. Motion on the continuance of our dispute with the university (link) 2. Motion: adoption of modified UCU model local rules (link) 3. Motion: donation to UCU University of Manchester branch fighting fund This local association agrees to donate £200 to the UCU University of Manchester who are striking over job cuts. Proposed by the committee 4. Election of UCU congress representatives Please submit nominations to the branch administrator by 24 hours before the start of the meeting. 5. Motions to (1) the Higher Education Special Sector Conference to determine national UCU industrial strategy and (2) the decision-making conference of pre-92 branches to determine a response to proposals in respect to USS. These conferences have been convened by UCU at short notice so we won’t be able to give the usual deadlines for submitting and circulating motions. Leeds UCU are in dispute with university management over proposed changes to Statutes – we are concerned these will make it easier to sack staff and that they pose a serious risk to academic freedom. Please read this article for details. The dispute is about the proposed addition of ‘some other substantial reason’ (SOSR) for dismissal, plus the removal of independents from appeals panels. These, together with efforts to remove union support in meetings called for by line management (which could be on the path to disciplinary meetings), are key aspects of “clearing the way” for management to terminate employment and reduce the chance of staff success at employment tribunals. Picketing Parkinson (and the rest!) Our three days of strike action were inspirational and heartening, especially as we were one of the early branches taking action after the Trade Union Act 2016. There has been a wonderful buzz in the air with positive engagement from students and other staff, plenty of invigorating discussions and ideas for the future. Senior managers invariably put out an eve-of-strike email to try to sow doubt in the minds of some union members before any strike. They do it last minute so that members are more likely to see the management letter than the union response. Here’s Vicky’s response on behalf of the UCU committee. It also gives detailed answers to some of the questions members have asked. Dear UCU Members, Please ask yourself the following three questions: Why is the university so keen to introduce these changes? Why have Senates at other universities rejected these changes? (for example Warwick, UCL) Why would anyone want to introduce something that has demonstrably been used at other universities to dismiss staff for reasons that we would not accept as valid? We have incredible strength when we stand together and we write again to thank everyone for all you are doing to prepare for our strike and Teach Out – it is amazing to see so many members coming together. We will make a real difference by turning out to strike for the full three days, with as many of you as can make it to the pickets each day.
