Tomorrow, the union’s Higher Education Committee (HEC) has an important decision to make, but the strike for USS remains on. Please turn out in great number on those Leeds picket lines from 7.30am tomorrow, and make them loud enough to hear from London. Lesley and I are both members of HEC, and we need to hear your views: is this the best offer you think we can get, or can we push harder, together, for a better deal? Motion: donation to UCU University of Manchester branch fighting fund This local association agrees to donate £200 to the UCU University of Manchester who are striking over job cuts. Proposed by the committee 4. Election of UCU congress representatives Please submit nominations to the branch administrator by 24 hours before the start of the meeting. 5. Motions to (1) the Higher Education Special Sector Conference to determine national UCU industrial strategy and (2) the decision-making conference of pre-92 branches to determine a response to proposals in respect to USS. These conferences have been convened by UCU at short notice so we won’t be able to give the usual deadlines for submitting and circulating motions. UCU members at the emergency general meeting this Thursday will vote on a motion proposing a further three days of strike action, and another asking UCU to begin its academic boycott, in the dispute over the changes to the university statutes. Full text below. Only members who attend the meeting are allowed to vote. Please attend if you can. The meeting is Thursday 14 September, 1pm–2pm, Mechanical Engineering lecture theatre B. The meeting will also discuss further threats to our pensions, based on what is widely believed to be flawed calculations. (Petition from 38Degrees calling on USS to show it’s workings.) The two motions which will be put to members on Thursday are: Motion 1 This meeting notes: That UCU is in dispute with Leeds University management over detrimental changes to Statutes, which form academic and academic related staff’ terms and conditions and protections, notably in relation to academic freedom. The deleterious changes are: Introduction of the undefined ‘Some Other Substantial Reason’ as grounds for dismissing staff. Removal of provision medically qualified chair for panels deciding dismissal for ill health; Removal of independent legally qualified practitioner for appeals against dismissal, other than in the University’s new proposed ‘substantial issues’ procedure.
