Branch policy: support for Sue Agazie, Newcastle University
The following motion was carried at the branch general meeting 29 April 2024 so is agreed collective policy (unless a more recent motion has superseded it). The text here is subject to approval of the minutes of that meeting and the approved minutes will be the correct version.
This branch notes:
- Sue is a Black, disabled, migrant PhD student at Newcastle University who was recruited under false financial promises by a now-abusive supervisor. She formally complained in February. NU wrote that her immigration status would be unaffected during the complaint, but reneged in March, threatening a report to the Home Office (which would curtail her student visa).
- Sue has terminal stage 5 kidney disease for which Nigeria lacks adequate treatment and aftercare. To survive, she needs a donor and to remain in the UK.
This branch believes:
- Hostile Environment, marketised HE, and racism create carceral learning environments for racialised migrant students.
- Students have a right to complete a complaint without migrant status/disability being weaponised against them.
This branch resolves to:
- Support the #WeAreAllSue campaign including Actions 1 (by 22 May) and 3 (£200)
- Invite Sue and URBC to speak to the branch about this case.
