UCU elections 2020
(Vice President, National Executive Committee members and Trustees)
UCU members* should have received a large white envelope in the post from UCU in early February with voting papers and candidate statements for this year’s elections. If it hasn’t arrived, you can request a replacement by completing the form at https://www.ucu.org.uk/election-ballot-request by Wednesday 26 February 2020.
Ballots close at noon on Wednesday 4 March 2020, so you are advised to post your votes (postage is pre-paid) by Saturday 29 February, or Monday 2 March at the latest.
Leeds members are able to vote for the next Vice President (who will be from Further Education), Trustees (who are responsible for oversight of the union’s property and funds), National Executive Committee members for the North East (which includes Yorkshire), women members’ representatives on the National Executive Committee, and nationally-elected members of the National Executive Committee. The National Executive Committee is responsible for conducting the union’s business between Congress meetings.
Please do use your votes – these are hugely important roles and the successful candidates will make important decisions on behalf of the union. Please read the candidates’ statements carefully to make your choices, and note that the election uses Single Transferable Voting, so you put 1 by your first choice candidate, 2 by your second choice etc. Some of the candidates are sending further information to branches, and we have provided below links to that information for you to consult to help you make your voting decisions. For more information, and copies of the candidates’ election addresses (as in the printed booklet you have received), see https://www.ucu.org.uk/article/10339/UCU-trustee-national-officer-and-national-executive-committee-elections-in-2019-20-ballots. From a Leeds perspective, note that:
- Dima Chami (our branch Equality Officer) has been elected unopposed to one of the two new migrant member posts on the NEC.
- Ruth Holliday (Sociology) is standing for one of the NE Region NEC seats.
* Please note: non-employed student members are not entitled to vote in this election. If you are currently registered as a student member and this is no longer applicable (eg if you are doing paid teaching for the university and are thus eligible for full free membership) please update your membership via myUCU. Once the change has been made a ballot paper will be automatically sent to you.
