UK government changes affecting migrant members
The UK Home Office is starting to make changes to immigration requirements from April 2024, as part of the government’s political position to reduce net migration. These include much higher earnings thresholds for people applying for new skilled worker and family visas, transitional arrangements for people with existing visas, updates to SOC (Standard Occupational Classification) codes and changes to supplemental work rules.
UCU’s immigration lawyers, Bindmans, have prepared a summary of these changes for members which can be found here (PDF).
The UCU website has more information, about resources and support for migrant members and the latest news about the activity of the UCU migrant members’ standing committee.
UCU continues to campaign to improve support for migrant members and to challenge government policies which target, persecute, and disenfranchise migrants in the UK.
Your Member of Parliament might want to know if you are badly affected by these government changes. You don’t need to be a UK citizen to contact your Member of Parliament (MP). You can find who your local MP is at https://members.parliament.uk/members/commons
